Eczema may be the first sign that your child has an allergy. It is often the first indicator of allergy in small children, and as the child grows, it can develop into other allergic diseases such as allergic rhinitis or asthma. If not properly treated, almost half the infants with eczema will later develop asthma. So if your child has eczema, save you both a lot of future distress by dealing with it now, even the rash is mild and only occurs now and then. If untreated, even mild allergy can escalate into something more serious and could be masking a hidden allergy .

Candida the invisible enermy in allergy is a yeast infection that plays an important role in autoimmune and chronic immune disorders, and also in allergies. Yeasts are single-celled organisms, and different forms of yeast normally exist in our bodies on the outside of mucous membranes. Of the different forms of Candida, the yeast most commonly associated with allergy is Candida albicans. Normally, it lives in the colon and mouth with other organisms, without causing harm.

However, if the body is weakened, or the delicate balance between harmful and beneficial microbes is somehow changed (perhaps by chemicals or certain foodsor an allergy), Candida populations can quickly grow out of control.

What Are Your Hives Telling You?

If you or your child has ever experienced an outbreak of hives, you know how unpleasant it can be. The good news is that hives are rarely life-threatening. The bad news is that they usually indicate that the body is not as healthy as it should be, and needs some serious TLC (tender loving care). Without that, you can expect hives to recur, and each time, it will probably get worse. As you read through this article, I hope you will be convinced that recurring hives are one way that your body-mind is signalling to get your attention.
.
Hives (also known as urticaria) is a rash with raised bumps that can be small like mosquito bites or the size of a plate. They can occur in the skin of the body or face, including the mouth, on the tongue or throat, or even in the stomach. Most hives disappear within minutes or hours, but some can remain for much longer. Some individuals get hives off and on for years, though that is relatively uncommon. Children are more likely than adults to develop hives, but adults also get them.

What Is Happening In The Body?

Hives are the result of inflammation of the tissues, which is caused by irritant chemicals such as histamine. Inflammation is actually one of the body’s best healing mechanisms. Special cells embedded in the mucous lining of the skin, nose, eyes, lungs, and gut release histamines that help destroy any parasites that might be causing infection. They also cause fluid to leak out of the blood vessels so that the blood vessels constrict to stop bleeding. This is what causes the swelling that is one of the four signs of inflammation:

  •     pain
  •    swelling
  •    heat
  •    redness.

However, if a person’s immune system has been weakened by infections, illness, stress, or allergies, this inflammation process can be disrupted, and may occur at random or in response to triggers that should not normally cause such a response.

What Sets Off An Outbreak Of Hives?

It is likely that some cases of hives are of this kind – an over-reaction to something by the immune system. So we see hives arising in some people after certain foods (such as strawberries) or drugs (such as aspirin or arthritis medication) are swallowed, or after physical contact with things such as plants or animals. One category of hives called physical urticarias result from stimulation to the skin cold, heat, water, tight clothing, sweat, or in rare cases, the sunlight. Stress can also set off an outbreak of hives. On the other hand, some kinds of hives appear to have no triggers at all, but just come up now and then.

Strangely enough, some doctors do not relate hives to allergy all, though chronic or recurring inflammation is almost always a sign of allergy. If an allergic reaction occurs near the skin, you will often see inflammation, and hives is a very common example. But not all hives are due to allergy. Hives can also be associated with diseases. For example, sensitivity to sunlight has been associated with lupus, and other autoimmune diseases and leukemia some times cause hives.

The point is that even when no reason can be identified, hives is a sign that something is out of order in your body or mind. It could be:

•    allergy to something (which is a further indication of some problem in the body, such as toxin overload or damage to the tissues, or a weak immune system)

•    stress overload

•    hyper-sensitivity to stimuli such as cold, heat or alcohol

•    lack of something such as an enzyme that your body needs to function properly

•    an underlying disease such as lupus or leukemia

In certain situations, though, such as contact with highly irritating plants such as poison ivy, hives is a very normal and healthy reaction – a warning to stay away.

Are Hives Dangerous?

Hives that occur on the skin or mouth are not usually dangerous, just irritating, and the swelling of the mouth can be a little embarrassing. However, swelling of the throat and tongue accompanies 1 in 3 cases of hives. This kind of internal swelling (called angioedema) can be dangerous because it can cause breathing problems that require urgent medical attention.

Angioedema can also occur in the tissues of the stomach, causing stomach cramps or severe pain, or in joint tissues, where it can cause pain or a burning sensation. Sometimes, angioedema occurs as part of an allergic reaction with or without hives. It can also be genetic in origin, where lack of a particular enzyme results in swelling without itchiness.

Treatment

Hives tend to grow more severe with each attack, therefore it is important to prevent future outbreaks as much as possible. That’s why it is important to take note of what leads to hives in you or your child.

•    Avoid foods or substances known to trigger hives. One way to determine which foods trigger hives is an elimination diet. Highly allergenic or suspected foods are eliminated from the diet for 4-7 days, then re-introduced one at a time. Note any adverse reactions to the foods as they are reintroduced. Avoid those foods.
•    Sensitive people should avoid stimuli known to cause a rash or hives, such as heat, sunlight, alcohol, spicy food, cold
•    The itching can be relieved with cool compresses, or perhaps with topical lotions.
•    Antihistamines can be used to reduce the itch or swelling
•    If serious throat swelling occurs, your doctor might prescribe a steroid or other drug

However, like all abnormal reactions, hives indicates that something is not quite right within the body-mind. Building good health with a diet of healthful, preferably uncontaminated (organic) foods, drinking lots of water to flush out toxins, living a balanced lifestyle that includes relaxation, exercise and rest, and frequently clearing your mind of stress will go a long way to preventing hives.

You should also seek the assistance of a professional health practitioner who can identify and help you correct any underlying health problems. Good health is worth cultivating.

What Kind of Eczema is It?

What is Eczema?

Eczema, which is sometimes also called dermatitis, is the name used for a group of conditions that cause skin inflammation. According to the Dermatology Information Service of the University of Heidelberg, eczema affects more than 10% of all adults and is even more common in infants and children, although the precise prevalence depends on the specific type. Eczema is caused by a combination of external, irritating agents and the body’s immune response to them; none of the types are contagious—that is, eczema cannot be passed from one person to another.
Eczema has no known conventional cure, though its symptoms can be managed with conventional medicine, and in some cases avoided altogether. However, most cases can be successfully cured using an integrative approach that corrects or eliminates the underlying causes, and heals the effects the disorder has had on the body.

Types of Eczema

The most common type of eczema, atopic dermatitis, is a chronic (ongoing) skin disorder that affects males and females equally. It is estimated to affect 10-20% of infants and children, and about 60% of affected children will continue to have symptoms as adults. However, it is only one of several different types of eczema. All types of eczema cause areas of skin inflammation, which can lead to skin damage, loss of some of the skin’s protective function, and extreme discomfort. The types are distinguished from one another by their causes and by the appearance and location of affected skin. The types are discussed in greater detail below.

Atopic dermatitis
This causes the skin to be dry, extremely itchy, and inflamed, although symptoms can vary greatly from one person to the next. The most consistent characteristic of atopic dermatitis is that it causes the patient’s skin to be extremely itchy. If the skin is scratched, inflammation in the area increases, which causes reddening and swelling. Eventually, the affected skin can crack, “weep” clear fluid, and crust over. If the skin doesn’t get a chance to heal, it can become rough, leathery, and scaly in texture, and can also become infected.
Atopic dermatitis is caused by the interplay of genetic makeup and environmental factors. All “atopic” diseases are allergic conditions with a strong genetic component, such as allergic asthma, hay fever, and atopic dermatitis. The conditions are clearly connected to one another: about 75% of children with atopic dermatitis will also develop asthma or hay fever and children whose parents had one of these conditions are much more likely to develop atopic dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis, like other atopic diseases, appears only in people who have an inherited predisposition for it.
What causes this predisposition to develop the disease? It appears that people with atopic diseases have some degree of immune system malfunction. Atopic dermatitis is associated with abnormal levels of certain immune system proteins. This causes the body’s immune system—designed to fight off invaders such as bacteria and viruses—to become over-reactive and attack the body as well as foreign substances.
People with atopic dermatitis also seem to have exceptionally dry skin, because their outer skin layer loses moisture more readily than in most people. When the outer layer of skin is extremely dry, it loses its ability to protect the inner, living layer of skin. This damage combined with immune system malfunction make the skin more vulnerable to irritation and infections.

Allergic Contact Eczema
Another common type of eczema, allergic contact eczema, occurs primarily in adults. It causes symptoms similar to those of atopic eczema: inflamed areas skin become red, itchy, and weepy. The main difference between allergic contact eczema and atopic eczema is cause. Allergic contact eczema is caused by a hypersensitive immune response to a particular foreign substance; atopic eczema is not caused by a single allergic reaction, but by an ongoing skin disorder that makes the skin hypersensitive to many different irritants and conditions.
Allergic contact eczema requires pre-exposure to the allergen (allergy-causing substance) before a reaction will occur. This initial contact sensitizes the skin to the allergen, so that the skin will react to later exposures. When the skin reacts to the allergen, it will do so only where it actually contacts the allergy-causing substance—symptoms are localized to the spot that touches the allergen.
The most common causes of allergic contact eczema are reactions to poison ivy and to metal jewelry, both of which stimulate a strong immune response in many people.

Contact eczema
Contact eczema, also known as irritant contact eczema, is similar to allergic contact eczema in that inflammation is limited to the area of skin that actually contacts the irritant. The skin reacts to the irritant by becoming red, itchy, and burning. Contact eczema does not require pre-exposure in order for the reaction to occur because it is usually caused by a strong irritant, such as an acid, alkali solution, or detergent. It also does not require a genetic predisposition to eczema, because it is caused by irritants that are powerful enough that they will eventually damage anyone’s skin. In severe cases, the irritants can cause chemical burns. This condition is often associated with workplace accidents

Seborrheic eczema
This is a common chronic disease that causes skin inflammation in areas containing sebaceous (oil) glands. In infants, it is called cradle cap. It appears as yellow, oily, scaly patches on the scalp, which can become inflamed and ooze. Inflamed patches spread quickly and can also appear on other parts of the baby’s body. Although this type of eczema appears unpleasant, it does not seem to make the baby uncomfortable and usually clears within a few months.
The adult form of seborrheic eczema is more commonly known as dandruff. It affects about 5% of adults and is more common in men than in women. It causes greasy, scaly patches on the scalp, which usually cause moderate to intense itching. Adult seborrheic eczema may be caused by a type of yeast.
Like most other types of eczema, seborrheic eczema usually cycles through more intense “flare-up” periods and periods of relapse, when it is less active. When the disease is not active, irritants such as sun exposure, heat, or irritating skin care products can cause flare-ups to begin.

Dyshidrotic eczema
This type of eczema occurs on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. It is a chronic condition characterized by deep blisters filled with clear fluid, which are often extremely itchy and burn. At later stages, the affected areas may peel; develop deep, painful cracks; become scaly or crusty; or suffer from secondary infections.
Although the precise cause of dyshidrotic eczema is unknown, doctors speculate that genetic predisposition, fungal infections, and contact with allergy-causing substances may all play roles in development of the disease. The condition is more likely to develop in people who spend a lot of time with their hands in water, such as nurses and food preparation staff. Onset of the disease is also associated with stress.

Nummular eczema
Also known as discoid eczema, it is characterized by extremely itchy, coin-shaped patches of skin inflammation, usually located on the arms, back, buttocks, and legs. The irritated skin areas can become crusted and scaly. Its cause is unknown, but it appears more frequently during cold weather and on patients with extremely dry skin. It is a chronic (ongoing) condition that can be triggered or worsened by many of the irritants that affect other types of eczema.
Because so many of the symptoms of nummular eczema overlap with those of other forms of eczema, some physicians do not believe that this is an independent disorder.

Neurodermatitis
Neurodermatitis is a type of eczema initially triggered by a localized irritation, such as an insect bite or too-tight clothing. The irritated skin hyper-reacts to the initial irritation. It becomes extremely itchy, and becomes even more irritated if scratched, rubbed, or even touched. Scratching triggers an itch-scratch cycle: the more the area itches, the more the patient scratches, which causes the area to itch even more. This cycle causes scaly patches of skin to develop around the original bite area. Continued scratching can also break through the skin, and eventually will cause the skin to thicken and roughen.
This is a chronic (ongoing) condition. Its cause is not known, but its onset can be triggered by irritants such as wool clothing. It results in itching so severe that it can disrupt sleep. This makes it a particularly difficult form of eczema to treat, because the irritated areas cannot heal until the patient stops touching them.

Stasis dermatitis
This type of eczema is characterized by scaly, greasy-looking skin on the lower legs or ankles and the development of an itchy rash. It is usually associated with circulation problems, which cause fluid to pool around the ankles and in the lower legs. Eventually, this fluid buildup impacts the skin, which becomes irritated and develops a rash. As the condition worsens, the skin thins, becomes more fragile, and can develop painful sores. Effective treatment requires treatment of the underlying circulation problem as well as treatment of the affected skin.

Living with Eczema

Regardless of the type of eczema, the condition can be managed, and sometimes, cured. Patients and physicians need to work together to create a treatment plan. This plan will include workable lifestyle changes to incorporate a skin care regimen and help the patient to avoid eczema triggers and skin irritants. It may also include stress management, as stress and emotional distress can play a large role in the development and severity of eczema. Many with eczema benefit from the emotional support and information available from eczema support groups. The treatment plan may also include a strategy for symptom treatment, including medications, how and when to use them, and may also use different complementary therapies.
With knowledge and a plan, people with eczema can manage the condition and live full and successful lives. On the other hand, some health practitioners have assisted patients to achieve a complete victory over eczema through a comprehensive strategy that incorporates nutrition, lifestyle changes, emotional work, and natural therapies to eliminate symptoms and strengthen the body’s natural healing ability.

Dear Friend,

If you realize you need a complete solution for your health problems rather the band-aid measures offered by conventional medical approaches designed to mask your symptoms while the causes of your condition run unabated, undiagnosed and untreated, but you just don’t know where to turn, then this breakthrough informative report will be the best thing you’ve read all year.

Here’s why….

We are becoming more TOXIC! Every year, we are exposed to an increasing amount of new man made toxins, chemicals and poisons in our environment polluting our water supplies, the air we breathe, the food we eat and the things we come into contact with. Our fast paced 21st century living habits with its increasing emotional and mental stresses puts an enormous toll on our body’s natural capacity to repair our body, eliminate and detoxify the huge amount of toxins and chemicals we are encountering every day.

The total accumulated and combined effects are not yet known, but we are seeing an increase in observable abnormal reactions in the body. Because the immune system is programmed to defend us from foreign substances, allergy or intolerance is one of the body’s initial responses. After many years of being in a hyper-excited stated trying to defend itself from constant toxic onslaught, the immune system becomes exhausted, and over reacts to commonly exposed agents in our environment, causing allergies, sensitivities and intolerances. This leaves the body with lowered defences, which can later lead to many forms of chronic degenerative diseases. You end up with a bewildering array of symptoms or conditions that no one seems to have long term solutions for, that are unknowingly caused by hidden allergies.

So who should get their allergies checked out?

Basically anyone with….

  • itchy eyes, sneezing, running nose, hives and itchy skin rashes
  • mood changes, fatigue after eating
  • Depression, Anxiety, Attacks, unexplained Anger and Mood swings
  • flagging mental and physical reserve and vitality
  • Regularly Low Energy, Tiredness or Fatigue
  • Unexplainable Headaches, Migraines or Neck pain
  • chronic conditions such as Diabetes, Heart disease, Arthritis, Asthma etc. as they often have underlying hidden allergies
  • Autoimmune diseases such as Crohn’s disease, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Lupus, Rheumatoid arthritis
  • hard to shed unwanted excess fat despite all the diet and exercise strategies
  • Gut ache, Bloating, Indigestion, Gas, Diarrhoea or Constipation
  • Rashes, Acne or itchy spots
  • unexplained Aches and Pains in your body
  • trouble with Poor Concentration, Foggy Brain and Memory
  • Poor health, behaviour and school performance in children
  • Chronically Low Immune System or Recurrent Infections Sleeping disorders
  • ADD or ADHD

All these conditions are commonly associated with underlying HIDDEN allergies or sensitivities…which are often overlooked. They are just NOT obvious because they are not the classic allergy symptoms we have all been trained to believe. You don’t think that these conditions or symptoms have anything to do with how you are unknowingly reacting to your environment or your food but you could be seriously wrong! And ignorance is NOT bliss, it can COST you dearly, in terms of continuing poor health, persistent symptoms and struggling energy.

Lets look at some allergy basics…..

What is an Allergy?

An allergy is an abnormal reaction to a substance that is usually considered harmless. These substances, which can be inhaled, ingested or even absorbed through the skin, are known as allergens. Thousands of ordinary substances can function as allergens. Allergy occurs when the body’s immune system, which is designed to attack foreign invaders such as bacteria, viruses and parasites, mistakes a harmless substance for a harmful substance and attacks it in an effort to protect the body.

It means that the person, for one reason or another, has lost the normal ability to cope appropriately with that substance. The substance itself is not the cause, it is only the trigger of the allergic reaction.

The truth is any symptom which your body is capable of producing can be of allergic origin. Not every symptom is allergy, but any symptom can be allergy. What about ulcers, high blood pressure, gall bladder disease, bed-wetting, arthritis or enlarged prostate? New information and research is showing that these conditions can be of allergic origin.

How the Sick Get Sicker, Quicker

Allergies can develop and spread insidiously over time. The spreading phenomenon starts once a person becomes sensitized, especially under stress when the immune system is suppressed, thus, over time he develops sensitivity to many other foods, moulds, Candida or other compounds. In addition, he has a multitude of vitamin deficiencies. It is as though the whole system has broken down. Once sensitized, any re-exposure will cause quicker and more frequent violent reactions.

Powerful drugs prescribed by doctors for millions of patients boasts numerous side effects because they are designed to block certain biochemical pathways to mask or treat symptom. By ignoring the underlying cause in using band-aid medicine, the cause is left to worsen and inevitably leave new symptoms in its wake. Drugs have effects of their own which induces further nutrient deficiencies, and thereby potentiating the decline in health of the patient.

How do you recognize an allergy?

This is our greatest challenge! We have been conditioned to think of allergy as being limited to such symptoms as runny nose or eyes, sinus problems, itchy skin rashes, asthma and hay fever. However, allergies are often unrecognized because they are much more insidious and extensive. Basically allergy can take the form of almost any chronic diseases such as headaches, arthritis, angina, musculoskeletal problems, depression, ulcerative colitis etc. Allergies do not cause every disease, but it can be involved in almost any disease.

Allergies can develop and spread insidiously over time. We all know of people who could eat certain foods before or be exposed to perfume or smells that they are now longer able to tolerate or stand. The diet becomes more and more restrictive over time! The chemicals or smells that you could previously tolerate before now sends you into a fit of fatigue, dizziness or mental nut case!

Most of us are familiar with the immediate allergy reactions such as hives, sneezing and even anaphylaxis, a massive life threatening allergic reaction that can kill in minutes. Anaphylaxis kills within sixteen minutes to two hours after contact with an allergen, whether it be from a bee sting, a handful of peanuts or a penicillin shot.

Delayed allergy reactions are much harder to recognize as most food allergies or sensitivities do not manifest for up to 72 hours after you have eaten the culprit, causing anything from fatigue, poor concentration, migraines to abdominal symptoms.

You can suspect allergy any time you have an inflammation anywhere in your body. Allergy follows the cardinal signs of inflammation: pain, swelling heat and redness. If the allergic reaction is near the skin, you will often see all four of these signs. For example, hives will show up as a red, warm, painful and swollen rash. In the gut, allergies will cause inflammation in the gut lining compromising nutrient absorption and digestion. Depending on where the reaction takes place, you will have different symptoms. Allergy can occur anywhere in the body, even in the brain.

Allergies, whether you recognize them or not, will weaken the body systems and immune system over time (months and years) so that the body cannot defend itself against foreign invaders and tissue degeneration, and chronic diseases can then gain a foothold in the body.

What are the Causes of Allergies or Sensitivities?

The causes of allergies are multifactorial. Allergy is the result of a number of insults to the body where the body becomes sensitized (usually under stress) on exposure to an allergen. The most common causes are dietary, STRESS and lifestyle factors that break down your immune system and barrier defenses. Specifically, genetic susceptibility, some child-rearing practices, barrier function default and toxic overload are in varying degrees responsible for the development and continuation of allergy and sensitivity. There is hardly any human disease or condition in which allergic factors are not involved.

Symptoms appear when allergic load is reached.

Allergic load is the amount of chemicals, food allergens and inhalant pollutants that a person can be exposed to before symptoms appear. It is the sum total of toxicity (toxic load) accumulated in the body before systems in the body break down, producing symptoms and alerting you to the fact that something is wrong.

Allergic or toxic load is different for everyone. Each person’s ability to metabolize toxins, foods and chemicals can differ considerably according to his own biochemical makeup. People are born with different constitution and genetic strengths and weaknesses. The child of a healthy mother has a much larger health reserve to start with than the child of an alcoholic mother. Toxic load is also dependent on what you have been exposed to over time. Farmers chronically exposed to pesticide sprays built up a toxic load of chemicals in their body faster than those in the general population.

When a certain point of toxicity is reached in the body from any source whether it is ingested, inhaled, injected, or absorbed through the skin, allergy is one of the first symptoms to appear as the system becomes overloaded and the immune system struggles to defend itself against the assault of toxins it is exposed to. If you reduce the intake of allergen from one source such as food, you will ease the burden of the entire immune system. In this way, you can help your body deal with other sources of allergies, such as particles in the air or contacts.

Here are some of the causes….

Early Childhood Practices lead to Allergy and Sensitivity
Breastfeeding mistakes, immunizations and early introduction of solid foods are among the leading contributors of early childhood allergies. Find out more in our book and seminar on this important subject….

Toxic Overload Impairs All Barrier Functions
As our food and environment becomes increasingly saturated with pollutants, pesticides and chemicals, the body’s natural ability to eliminate and detoxify toxins cannot keep up with the chemical deluge. All organs involved in detoxification, which include the barrier systems of the intestines, skin and respiratory system, can become overloaded. This overload weakens the barrier functions, makes it permeable to large molecules and toxins, and can lead to sensitization. In addition, the constant circulation of toxins in the body taxes the immune system, which must constantly strive to destroy or eliminate them. An overburdened immune system ultimately becomes hypersensitive and allergies…to food, airborne agents, and chemicals….develop.

Stress and Overexposure:
Stress in any form, whether it be chemical, emotional, physical or environmental stress can contribute to allergic symptoms. Any stress that is beyond a person’s ability to cope will lead to adaptive changes physically and mentally.

Did you know that many cases of “mental stress” or depression can also be due to chemicals in the environment not previous suspected such as candida infections, toxins in food, electromagnetic pollution?

Illness:
After infectious illness, such as glandular fever, a bout of flu, hepatitis etc. changes takes place in the body that allows allergy to emerge and react more readily to allergic stimuli.

Biochemical changes take place in the body during prolonged illness, weakening the immune system leading to decreased resistance to allergic stimuli. For example, asthma can develop after pneumonia or bronchitis. Infection of the intestine can make its lining more leaky to undigested food particles, producing allergies. The yeast Candida albicans can produce hundreds of toxins (such as acetaldehyde, alcohol, steroid substances etc.) which can spread throughout the body weakening the immune system and contribute to allergic symptoms.

Dental fillings:
Mercury is a component of silver amalgam used in dental fillings. Did you know that mercury is highly toxic to the nerves and immune system? It also acts as an antinutrient in the body, blocking the actions of many nutrients and rendering them ineffective. Bacteria and fungi in the mouth can convert mercury into an even more toxic product called methyl mercury. Mercury is one of many toxins capable of contributing to chemical overload in the body, blocking enzymes and leading to degenerative disease, including allergies.

Over Exposure to a given Foods or Chemical:
Repeated consumption of a specific food plays a part in allergy by depleting the enzyme systems. Daily overeating of a few specific foods has the effect of stressing the particular enzyme systems to handle that food. If the food is an allergic food, then the body’s capacity to deal with it is greatly diminished.

Inhalants or Contactants:
In some people, triggers such as dust, pollens, insect debris, animal dander and airborne chemicals plays a major role in allergy.

Compromised Barrier Function: The Root of Allergy and Sensitivity
The barrier functions of organs keeps the patient from becoming sensitized. There are three major barriers and some supporting organs.

1. The Gut is the barrier function for food sensitivity or intolerance. Inadequate digestion for any reason (infection, enzyme deficiency, inflammation, malabsorption, parasites, yeasts, drugs or toxins) may damage the intestinal wall causing excessive permeability and a barrier default (called leaky gut syndrome), and particles that are too large slips through gaps in the gut wall and enter the bloodstream. Then the potential for sensitization to certain foods or chemicals can occur (especially to the things they eat the most).

2. The Respiratory Mucous that covers the membranes of the sinuses and respiratory passages is the barrier to inhaled substances (dust, pollens, danders, moulds etc.). The purpose of the mucus is to trap any irritants and particulates so that they do not come in contact with the membranes and can be removed (blowing the nose, sneezing or coughing). If there is too much mucous, the passages can’t drain and infection results. If there are areas with not enough mucous or one uses drugs to stop the protective mucous formation, a pollen that comes in direct contact with the membrane may irritate it enough so that the pollen is absorbed into the bloodstream and sensitization occurs

3. The Skin is the third barrier. Any break in the skin (cut, burn, rash etc.) can compromise the skin barrier. Sensitization may occur with any substance that comes in contact with that area of skin. Also many chemicals in cosmetics, perfumes, jewelry, deodorants, sunscreens can be absorbed through the skin and are commonly sensitized.

4. Organs that support barrier functions are the adrenal, thyroid, endocrine glands, and the pancreas which regulates the blood sugar. These organs also provide energy to the immune system. When these systems are overwhelmed by chronic stress or over consumption of sugar, the immune system and barrier functions are suppressed, paving the way for allergy and sensitivity.

The Role of Nutrition

Inadequate nutrition is one of the greatest factors in determining whether you will develop allergies or not. Modern food practices have contributed to significant disease and allergic load. Our food have been exposed to pesticides, flour “improvers”, anti-staling agents, emulsifying compounds, artificial colourings, preservatives and a terrifying array of potentially toxic substances now being added to our food to improve appearance, flavour, shelf-life and profitability.

In addition, nutritional deficiencies increase with age due to lack of enzymes, allergies and poor eating patterns Our team of skilled naturopaths and nutritionists will perform an individual nutritional evaluation to develop a comprehensive tailored nutritional plan for you to correct nutritional deficiencies, support your adrenals and thyroid, balance your hormones, and address barrier function defaults, allergies and environmental stresses.

Our body may not have the sufficient enzyme systems and detoxification ability to eliminate or neutralize all the toxic effects of the huge smorgasbord of chemicals taken in. It is known that oxidative enzymes certain vitamins and minerals are necessary to eliminate or neutralize the toxins. But we often over-tax our body’s ability to produce the substances necessary to neutralize and eliminate the chemicals. When the demand is greater than the supply, the body must pull in compensatory mechanisms in order to defend itself, and eventually all buffers run out. This is like a car trying to run on an empty fuel tank….

Lets look at the treatment options…..

What Can Conventional Medicine Do for You?

  • Give you Drugs to swallow such as Telfast, Zyrtec, Claratyne, Somac, Nexium, Zoton, Quick-eze or Cortisone etc. to band-aid your symptoms and mask the cause
  • Weekly doctor visits for desensitizing painful injections over 1 year
  • Give you sprays and antibiotics to unblock your sinuses, dam up sniffly nose, keep your airways open and suppress asthma symptoms  Harmful skin thinning cortisone creams and lotions

What about the Natural Medicine Approach?

You decide to dump the conventional medical approach that offers no long term sustainable solutions and go for the natural approach. So off you go and visit some alternative health practitioners. They give you some good nutritional advice, work on your digestion and you walk out with a bagful of vitamins and supplements. The trouble is:

  • Are you get tired of taking handfuls of vitamin pills every day and finding that they have no effect? In fact, they may make you feel nauseous or upset in the gut and want to throw up?
  • Are you fed up with being on long term restrictive elimination diets or rotation diets making you feel deprived, cranky and a social outcast?  Are you sick of cooking boring gluten free or allergy free recipes for the rest of your life?
  • Are you totally frustrated with not finding any decent food you can safely eat or drink when you go out, without getting a hangover or fearing a bad reaction?

Did you know that Allergies can Spoil Your Looks?
