I empathise with your and your wife's difficulties, and you are wise to be concerned. Yes, your wife's medications could trigger allergies, as could all kinds of other problems such as stress, toxins (including those in medications, food, water etc), gut problems or other underlying health issues. Even if a person has no prior history of allergies, these factors can stress the immune system to the point that it develops hypersensitivities. I would suggest that you consult a holistic medical doctor about the health of your wife's immune system, her hormonal balance and also to consider whether your wife's system is being affected by toxins. Certainly, you might want to consider getting your wife's allergies treated, but the problems of toxin overload, gut dysfunction and poor immunity must be addressed if she is to regain her health and improve her chances of IV success. It sounds like an awful lot, Abdul, but these problems are often closely interrelated, so treatments often overlap. If anything, I would suspect the underlying gut problem is a central issue here, as it is in so many other health disorders and diseases. I wish you success in finding the solutions you and your wife need.

I would like to comment that I also have increased allergies before my period. I often have crackedlip corners and swollen bottom lip 1) one week before or sometime afte my monthly allergy shot and 2) 1 week before my period.

I also have a question. I had a shot of Kenalog into my toe, which made me feel like I had the flu. I had a similar response to Kenalog a few years prior when I had an injection inmy lumbar. However, after this second shot, I started having a ravenous appetite, then perheps 3 weeks later I got very stubborn hives on my chest. I used antihistamines and steriod cream round the clock, then added acupuncture and chinese herbs. Only acupuncture helped a little; the cream actually made things worse, as did any drop of sweat -- unavoidable on a womn's chest!

Anyhow, I am in my late 30s. I am wondering if perimenopause was triggered by the last injection. I am extrememly fatigued and my allergies are much worse now. My mouth cracks will not go away now. I think I am having hot flashes (although my office is stuffy, so hard to say). I finally got rid of the hives after 3 months using milk thystle and a homeopathic remedy.

It's hard to sort my regular chronic fatiigue and chronic allergies from this heightened condition, but I think there has been a change. Am I off-base to suspect I am in a new stage of life? Even though I live in Boston, mecca of doctors, so many of them are sooo useless with regard to these types of things.

Thanks in advance

Dr Price
Below is a letter I gave to my dentist when I went for a regular checkup. I figured I had talked to everyone else and I should talk to him. He had no idea how to help me or what was causing my problem. He could not see anything more in my mouth than the fissure in my tongue, it being red and having whitish patches down the sides. He did not believe that it was anything needing a biopsy. I can tell you though, the pain is unreal at times, and makes me miserable. Anytime I tell anyone about my maladies near my period they look at me as if I am nuts. I have sinus related asthma they developed about 6 years ago.The specialists then told me I was just one of the lucky women that was allergic to her hormone changes. Then it was okay as I can do something to keep the asthma away. With the problems now no one can find anyting wrong and it's not funny anymore. Always the week before my period my fingernails seem to grow longer - I believe that ist is just that I am not nervous - and as soon as the bleeding finishes I get all antsy and chew my fingernails down - it's like I can't stop until they are all gone - then I'm okay. As I state below I am overweight, take Synthroid for thyroid problem, take Prozac for PMS and stress, take Verapamil and Lisinopril for bloodpressure and take Nexium everyday for Acid Reflux. I also have psoriasis and take Enbrel injections for that. I am 51, single with a 32 and 20 yr. old children and am raising the 32 year old's 2 daughters because she cannot. My 20 year old is in college and I have been on my job for 30 years. It just seems the older I get the worse things happen near my period. Do you have any suggestions as I live in Wilmington, NC and I do not know who I could contact that might have some knowledge and be a ble to help me. Thank you very much for your time.

Letter to my Dentist
For the last 6 months, today Jan 21, 2009 being the 6th, my period maladies have changed. I bleed for a week. I sometimes have the next week of freedom. But for the next 2 weeks before my next period I have what I now call geographic tongue and I have an insane itch/pain in my private area. The doctor has checked my private area twice and found nothing. The last time he gave me a steroid cream to use and it kind of works, the only thing is I can only use it for 5 days. He says he will try hormone cream if this does not work. I have psoriasis and take Enbrel shots twice a week, which controls my scaling. At first when I got the “geographic tongue”, my gums on my bottom front teeth began hurting/itching. I thought I had some kind of gum disease and would wiggle my teeth to see if they were loose and rub my gums. My grandmother and brother had gum disease and lost their teeth. I keep a tooth brush in my car just to rub my gums when this starts. About 4/5 years ago I developed what I call a crack in the center of my tongue. Up until that point in my life I had always been able to eat spicy hot food and loved jalapeños. I can no longer eat anything spicy other than something containing black pepper as it does not bother my tongue. When this mouth thing flairs up my bottom lip gets itchy inside and I bite or rub it a lot, the side of my tongue feels swollen and hurts and my gums either hurt or itch but my tongue hurts like I drank hot coffee and scalded it. I get a slight sore throat and my glands under my ears become swollen. I went to a doctor in our practice and he gave me some lozenges that I let dissolve in my mouth 3 times a day. This seemed to help. I went to Medac Urgent Care and they gave me Duke’s Miracle Mouthwash which is so sweet I can’t stand it and it really doesn’t seem to do anything. I had a sore throat and my glands were swollen so they also gave me Z-Pac which seemed to help. I told my GP about it and he agreed with the mouthwash. I had to go and get a refill for my Enbrel and told the dermatologist about my tongue and she gave me Protopic Ointment to put on my tongue which is really weird and doesn’t seem to do anything. She also said they had one other patient that had geographic tongue near her period and they put her on birth control pills and it worked for her. I am 51, don’t have sex, had 2 kids, raising my grandkids and have high blood pressure – DO NOT NEED BIRTH CONTROL! When my gums are bothering me it’s a hurt/itch so that I grind my teeth to make them feel better. It’s almost like I can feel the roots of my teeth in to my jaw bone and it almost always the bottom teeth that bother me. The thing is that it gets so bad that it interferes with my sleep – getting to sleep – and has on occasions woken me up. It has been suggested and I believe this, that it is hormonal. The really bad thing is that it hurts to eat and I can’t afford to loose my girlish figure of 302 lbs – yes I know that is killing me slowly. I am so miserable. I began taking Prozac 5 years ago because of depression during my periods – PMS – horrible. I used to have sinus infection and diarrhea a week before my period. Before I got my Carpel Tunnel surgery, when it was time for my period – a week or so before – both of my hands would go numb and hurt like crazy. I would drop things then too. I used to get cankers in my mouth right before my period. I still get boils on my legs and on my bottom during the time before my period. They can be very painful and sometimes get huge and bleed. My doctor put me on iron pills because 2 times in the last month I came up with hemoglobin of 9 (at 2 different doctor’s offices). There are other things that have plagued me near my period that right now I can’t remember. I know this is a lot of info but do you know of any help for my mouth?
Thanks,
Miserable

After removing my spleen I begun to suffer from severe allergies at least three years after the operation. The allergies weakened over time but other symptoms diid not diminish like migraines before a period, tiredness and in the middle of the cycle great exhaustion and depressive mood. Should I check anything?

I have taken penicillin on many occasions without problem, but during my latest caesearean section (6 months ago) I went into anaphylactic shock about 3 mins after they administered penicillin via IV. Having now read yor article, it seems that maybe hormone levels were a contributing factor? Have you ever heard of similar cases? Interestingly, although the blood tests taken straight after the section revealed a significant penicillin allergy, when I was skin tested in the immunology clinic 6 weeks later, the skin tests showed up as negative for a penicillin allergy.

I would be interested to hear your thoughts on this.

Many thanks

Hello Ruth As I say in my article on hormones and allergy, it is not at all uncommon for women's allergies to worsen during or around menstruation due to additional stresses on the body at that time as the hormonal balance changes. You may also be allergic to one of the hormones invovled in your period. That's not as far out as you might think, since allergies and emotions are often linked. You can develop an allergy to a body chemical (including hormone) that is unconsciously associated with a past trauma or time of high stress. You might want to you get yourself tested for hormone allergies, but really, you probably need a complete going over to identify just what's wrong. I am a concerned that you have been shown allergic to 40 foods. That indicates that there are fundamental problems underlying your allergies, perhaps toxic overload or unresolved emotions, hormonal imbalance, or a seriously compromised immune system. Unless the underlying problems are corrected, your allergies will continue to affect you, and may even spread. What questions should you be asking? Here are a few: Is my body overloaded with toxins that are weakening my immune system? Is my digestive system healthy or could I have leaky gut? Are my hormones out of balance? How healthy is my thyroid? my liver? Do I have a chronic infection from parasites, bacteria or fungus such as Candida? The point is, until you know what's making you ill, you can't treat it. Meanwhile, to reduce the burden on your system and give your immune system a break, you want to ensure that your diet is full of fresh vegetables, and that you avoid toxins in any form, including all those found in processed foods. You might be pleased to know that recent research shows that most food allergies are reactions to the additives in processed foods, not to natural foods. Even people with milk or egg allergies can sometimes tolerate organic milk and eggs, showing that it's often what's been added to the foods that is harmful....all those hormones, antibacterials, pesticides and other chemicals used in food production that can accumulate in our tissues. If you're located around SE Queensland, you might want to have a total health assessment. We use advanced bioresonance testing technology to identify many health problems, including allergies, and can also test your blood etc to find out the true state of your health. Then we could start getting your health back in order so that you can begin living a happy healthy life. I wish you the very best with your journey to health, Ruth. If we can help you, just email us at enquiries@rycentre.com, or get in touch with us through our website at www.renewyoujourney.com Dr. Dzung Price

I am convinced my allergies get worse every time I have a period. My current Dr. who uses many natural remedies says it is all emotional. While there is a componet of emtions, that cannot be all. My lastest test said I should not be eating approximately 40 different food and I am unable to make this change without loosing massive weight, which I can not afford. One person has referred me to an endocrinologist. How do I stop the cycle? What other questions should I be asking??

When I take birth control pill i have the following side effects

1. Heavier periods
2. fast heartbeat I can actually feel it thumping
3. depression
4. bad mood (yes i know this is common on birth control)
5. anxiety (panic all time)

I was wondering what with the rapid heartbeat and the heavier than normal period could i have had an allergic reaction to the pill, or the hormones in it?

since i stopped taking birth control pill
my period is back to normal
and my heart beat is better. (i do have a heart murmer)
And the anxiety has gone
i still have bad days but dont we all

should i have an allergy test?
